ABOUT THE TEACHER

H.E. Khensur Jhado Tulku Rinpoche was born in 1954 north of Lhasa, Tibet. He took novice vows with H.H. the Dalai Lama in 1964 and received full ordination from Ling Rinpoche in 1973. Between 1972 and 1990, he studied at Sera Je Monastery and obtained the Geshe Lharampa degree in 1991. From 1992 to 1996, he taught at Namgyal Monastery in Dharamsala, and later served as its abbot from 1997 to 2004.
Jhado Rinpoche is one of the most respected lamas of the Gelug tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. In addition to his excellent monastic education, he received numerous oral transmissions and empowerments from H.H. the Dalai Lama, his two tutors, and great masters of other traditions, such as Trulshik Rinpoche. Jhado Rinpoche is renowned for his profound scholarship, his dynamic teaching style, and his ability to connect personally with Western students.

ABOUT THE TEACHINGS & INITIATION:

Lamrim is the step-by-step path to enlightenment drawn from Shakyamuni Buddha’s teachings, and within FPMT it’s considered essential to study before receiving any tantric initiation. Tantra itself is an advanced Mahayana method built on a solid foundation of sutra practice, with three prerequisites: renunciation, bodhichitta, and an understanding of emptiness. The practice being offered here falls under Kriya Tantra, the first and most external of the four classes of tantra, centered on activities like prayers and mudras. Tara, the deity at the heart of this practice, is a fully enlightened Buddha who appears in female form to protect beings from the eight fears, and prayer or meditation on her is said to clear obstacles, enhance compassion and wisdom, and dispel poverty.

Anyone is welcome to attend, whether or not they’ve taken vows beforehand. Refuge, bodhichitta, and the bodhisattva trainings can all be taken during the ceremony itself, and even attending simply to receive a blessing, without formal commitment, is considered powerful and auspicious.

🪷 We will offer a preparatory teaching before the event, where all of these aspects will be discussed and clarified. Geshe Norbu will give a preparatory talk the weekend before Jhado Rinpoche’s arrival, for those who are taking or considering taking teachings or empowerments from His Eminence.
